Remember Little Residents

"I have noticed over the years that when someone comes to the office with their children and they are in there for a long period of time, whether it is- applicants come in to fill out an application, someone comes in for a move-in or a resident comes in for a re-cert- that they are distracted and get flustered. So I set up a little table at my family property where their children could color. I Google "coloring pages" and print out pages for FREE! I have even asked the children what they like and get a specific coloring page. Ex: Google- 'Dora Coloring pages' http://www.nickjr.com/printables/dora-the-explorer/all-themes/all-ages/index.jhtml

Gary, the manager in Tonopah has crated a small “Belmont Coloring Book" with pictures to color and has his properties contact information on it that he gives out to applicants when they come in. It’s a great way to make our applicants feel welcome and it also gets our properties name and information in a handy place to remind them of us!

Last week Gwen of Riverwood decided to make her property (of 208 family units) a friendlier environment. Because they have the space she got a little table, coloring books and a basket of toys for the office. As you can imagine with 208 family units, they get quite a few little household members that get bored while their parents are doing their re-cert paperwork. Already residents and applicants alike love the area and feel more comfortable in the office."  ~ Michelle West (see: "Remember the Little Residents" slide show)

Disability/Handicapped

The English language is flooded with synonyms. Every word has a definition, but sometimes even with a definition it is hard to discern the difference between the two words. "Disability" and "Handicap" are two such words that are often misused and misunderstood.

      Disability Defined

o    According to the World Health Organization, a disability is "any restriction or lack (resulting from any impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being."

Handicap Defined

o    The World Health Organization's definition of a handicap is the "loss or limitation of opportunities to take part in the life of the community on an equal level with others; encounter a person with disability and social, physical environment. Is an inability to accomplish something one might want to do. The term emphasize the focus on shortcomings in the environment and in many tasks and activities, ex. in education, occupation, information or communication (social dimension)."

Political Correctness

o    One difference between the two terms is political correctness. Society views the term "disabled" as a politically correct way of saying "handicapped." If you want to be politically correct in your language and are not interested in the subtle difference between these two terms, use "disabled."

Degree of Inability

o    Another way to dissect the terms "disability" and "handicap" is to look at the degree of inability a person experiences. If a person is completely unable to do something, then that would be considered a disability. If, however, the person is simply limited in doing something, then that is considered a handicap. For example, being bound to a wheelchair is a disability but needing a cane to help you walk is a handicap because you can still walk.

Synonymous Meanings

o    Still another way to look at "disability" and "handicap" is to think they mean the same thing. The differences between these two terms are generally viewed as vague and minute; therefore, permitting people to use the two words interchangeably.

Labor Day

The first Labor Day in the United States was observed on September 5, 1882, by the Central Labor Union of New York.  It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the US military and US Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer.  Families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel.  Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. NCAA teams usually play their first games the week before Labor Day, with the NFL traditionally playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day.  The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parties. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, water sports, and public art events.   In Elko it is last day of the County Fair and Horse Races.

How ever you celebrate ~ have a great week-end!
